Sora & Kru: Phuket (ภูเก็ต — phuu-gèt) is Thailand's largest island and the gateway to the south. It's cosmopolitan, beautiful, and has fantastic food — both tourist-facing and deeply local. Knowing some Thai here goes a very long way.

📍 Phuket at a glance

Phuket Town (เมืองภูเก็ต) = the old town with Sino-Portuguese architecture, the best local food, and far fewer tourists than the beaches. Patong (ป่าตอง) = the busiest beach — loud, fun, chaotic. Kata & Karon = quieter, good surf in monsoon season. Getting there: fly from Bangkok (~90 min) or bus (~12 hours — not recommended!). Phuket has its own airport — สนามบินภูเก็ต (sà-nǎam bin phuu-gèt).

Arriving & Getting Around Phuket

Sora & Kru: The islands around Phuket and Krabi are among the most beautiful places on earth. Each one has a different character — know which to pick for what you want.

The Famous Islands
🏝️
Koh Phi Phi
เกาะพีพี
gòw phii-phii
The most famous — and busiest. Two islands connected by a narrow strip of beach. The views are extraordinary — sheer limestone cliffs, turquoise water. Phi Phi Don (the big one) has accommodation and bars. Phi Phi Leh is where The Beach was filmed. Go early morning to Maya Bay to beat the crowds.

How to get there: Ferry from Phuket (~90 min) or Krabi (~45 min).
🪸
Koh Lanta
เกาะลันตา
gòw lan-dtaa
Long, quiet, and beautiful. Koh Lanta is a large, laid-back island south of Krabi. Long stretches of beach, excellent snorkelling, and a wonderful old Muslim town (Ban Ko Lanta) at the south. Less crowded than Phi Phi. Great for a few days of proper rest.

Best for: Families, couples, slow travel, good food.
🌅
Koh Yao Noi
เกาะยาวน้อย
gòw yao nóoi
The secret island. Sits right between Phuket and Krabi in Phang Nga Bay — 30 minutes by boat from either. Quiet Muslim fishing community, rubber plantations, no party scene. The views of the bay's limestone karsts are spectacular. Almost no one goes here — which is exactly the point.

Best for: Authentic Thailand, cycling, sea kayaking, total peace.
🏄
Koh Samui
เกาะสมุย
gòw sà-mui
The Gulf coast alternative. On the other side of the peninsula — the Gulf of Thailand. Bigger and more developed than most islands. Chaweng beach is the busy heart. Great for full moon parties nearby at Koh Pha Ngan. Has its own airport — flights from Bangkok (~70 min).

Best for: First-timers, those who want resort amenities, nightlife.
