Sora & Kru: Bangkok (กรุงเทพมหานคร — grung-thêep má-hǎa-ná-khawn) is one of the world's great cities — enormous, overwhelming, and endlessly rewarding once you know how its neighbourhoods work.

🗺️ How Bangkok is structured

Bangkok has no single centre — it's a collection of distinct neighbourhoods connected by the BTS Skytrain, MRT, river boats, and tuk-tuks. The BTS Sukhumvit and Silom lines are your main arteries. Silom/Sathorn = financial district. Sukhumvit = expat hub. Riverside = old Bangkok. Chatuchak = north. Khao San = backpacker base. Learn the BTS map and Bangkok opens up completely.

🏮
Yaowarat / Chinatown
เยาวราช
yao-wá-râat
Bangkok's oldest and most atmospheric district. Gold shops, temples, street food, herbal medicine — and at night, one of the world's great street food strips. Yaowarat Road lights up after dark with roast duck, seafood, dim sum, and crowds everywhere. The MRT has a Yaowarat station now — easy to reach.
🍜 Street food🏛️ History🥮 Dim sum🌃 Nightlife
🌿
Rattanakosin / Old Bangkok
รัตนโกสินทร์
rát-dtà-naa-goo-sin
The historic heart — Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha), the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, and Wat Arun all cluster here. Walk along the river, cross by ferry, and explore the old neighbourhood on foot. No BTS — take a taxi or the river boat. Go early before the heat and crowds.
🙏 Temples👑 Palace🛶 River📸 Must-see
Ari / Phahon Yothin
อารีย์
aa-rii
Bangkok's coolest local neighbourhood — where young Thais actually live and hang out. Independent cafés, plant shops, vintage stores, and excellent local restaurants. Not touristy at all. If you want to see how modern Bangkok really lives, spend a morning here. BTS Ari station.
☕ Cafés🛍️ Local shops🍜 Great food😎 Local vibe
🎨
Ekkamai / Thong Lo
เอกมัย / ทองหล่อ
èk-gà-mai / thong-làw
Bangkok's most stylish dining and nightlife corridor. Japanese influence is strong — great ramen, izakayas, and cocktail bars. Thong Lo is where Bangkok's beautiful people go on weekends. Ekkamai has excellent independent restaurants and a more local feel. BTS Thong Lo and Ekkamai.
🍸 Nightlife🍣 Japanese food✨ Trendy🌙 Late night
💼
Silom / Sathorn
สีลม / สาทร
sǐi-lom / sǎa-thawn
Bangkok's financial and business district — skyscrapers, sky bars, and great lunch spots. Lumpini Park is here — a green oasis where office workers exercise at dawn. Patpong Night Market is also in Silom — touristy but worth a walk. BTS Sala Daeng and Chong Nonsi.
🏙️ Skyline🌳 Lumpini Park🥂 Rooftop bars🌃 Night market

Sora & Kru: Chatuchak Weekend Market (ตลาดนัดจตุจักร — dtà-làat nát jà-dtù-jàk) is one of the largest markets in the world — over 15,000 stalls selling everything from antiques to live animals to vintage clothes to street food. Only open Saturday and Sunday.

Navigating Chatuchak
🛍️ How to survive Chatuchak

The market has 27 sections — get a map at the entrance. Go early (open from 9am) before the afternoon heat becomes brutal. Wear comfortable shoes. Bring cash — most vendors don't take cards. The BTS Mo Chit and MRT Chatuchak Park stop right outside. Budget 3–5 hours minimum.

01
How do I get to Chatuchak market?
ไปตลาดจตุจักรยังไง?
bpai dtà-làat jà-dtù-jàk yang-ngai?
Sora: ตลาด (dtà-làat) = market. ยังไง (yang-ngai) = how? Very casual — perfectly natural for asking directions.
02

Sora: เสื้อผ้า (sûea-phâa) = clothes. โซน (soon) = zone/section. ส่วน (sùan) = part/section.

05
Where is the nearest toilet?
ห้องน้ำอยู่ที่ไหนที่ใกล้ที่สุด?
hâwng-nám yùu thîi-nǎi thîi-glâi thîi-sùt?
Sora: ห้องน้ำ (hâwng-nám) = toilet/bathroom. Literally "water room." ที่ใกล้ที่สุด = nearest. Essential Chatuchak phrase — the toilets are scattered throughout.

Sora & Kru: Yaowarat (เยาวราช) — Bangkok's Chinatown — is over 200 years old. By day it's a warren of gold shops and spice merchants. By night it becomes one of Asia's greatest street food experiences.

Exploring Yaowarat
01
We're looking for the roast duck stalls.
กำลังหาร้านเป็ดย่างอยู่
gamlang hǎa ráan bpèt-yâang yùu
Sora: กำลัง...อยู่ (gamlang...yùu) = currently doing (ongoing action). หา (hǎa) = to look for/find. เป็ดย่าง (bpèt-yâang) = roast duck.
02
This street is amazing at night!
ถนนนี้ยามค่ำคืนสวยงามมากเลย!
thà-nǒn níi yaam khâm-khuen sǔay-ngaam mâak looei!
Sora: ยามค่ำคืน (yaam khâm-khuen) = at nighttime. สวยงาม (sǔay-ngaam) = beautiful/magnificent. More formal than just สวย.
03
The gold shops are so interesting — everything is 24 carat here.

Sora & Kru: Sukhumvit (สุขุมวิท — sù-khum-wít) is Bangkok's longest road and the spine of the expat and tourist world. Numbered sois (streets) branch off it — odd numbers on one side, even on the other.

Navigating Sukhumvit
🌃 Understanding Sukhumvit sois

Sukhumvit is divided into สอย (soi) — side streets numbered from Soi 1 upward. Soi 3 = Nana (Arabic quarter). Soi 11 = bars and nightlife. Soi 31-35 = quieter, residential. Soi 38 = legendary night food market (though reduced now). Thong Lo (Soi 55) and Ekkamai (Soi 63) are the cool dining destinations. The BTS runs all the way — take it everywhere.

01
Which BTS station is closest to here?
สถานี BTS ที่ใกล้ที่สุดอยู่ที่ไหน?

hâang thôe-mí-nâwn yîi-sìp-èt yùu glâi BTS à-sòok mǎi?
Sora: ห้าง (hâang) = shopping mall. BTS อโศก (à-sòok) is connected directly to Terminal 21 — one of Bangkok's best malls, each floor themed as a different world city.

Sora & Kru: Khao San Road (ถนนข้าวสาร — thà-nǒn khâao-sǎan) is legendary. The backpacker universe — cheap guesthouses, street food, bars, braided hair, and a thousand travel plans being made at once. It's chaotic, fun, and has its own energy unlike anywhere else.

Around Khao San
01
How far is Khao San Road from the Grand Palace?
ถนนข้าวสารอยู่ไกลจากพระบรมมหาราชวังแค่ไหน?
thà-nǒn khâao-sǎan yùu glai jàak phrá-baw-rom-má-hǎa-râat-chá-wang khâe nǎi?
Sora: พระบรมมหาราชวัง (phrá-baw-rom-má-hǎa-râat-chá-wang) = Grand Palace. It's a mouthful — locals just say วัง (wang = palace) in conversation. About 15 minutes' walk!
02

Sora & Kru: The BTS Skytrain is Bangkok's lifeline — fast, air-conditioned, and goes everywhere that matters. Learn this and Bangkok becomes easy.
